Chain-link, privacy and vinyl fences
We install three kinds of fence: chain-link, wood privacy and vinyl. Every fence starts with a layout we walk with you before the first post hole, and no hole gets dug until 811 has marked the buried utilities.
One customer had us put in 300 feet of black chain-link. Their gate went on backorder, and we kept after it until it arrived.
Co-owner Ryan Bolinger runs the day-to-day on every job. Travel is built into the bid price. Our office is at 300 Ohio Street, Suite E, but we don’t take walk-ins, so please call first if you’d like to stop by.

What a fence costs
Every fence we build is installed with posts set in concrete. A 4- to 5-foot galvanized chain-link fence typically runs $18 to $28 per linear foot, a 6-foot pressure-treated wood privacy fence $32 to $45, and a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence $40 to $55. Gates are priced separately, and the estimate is free.
We don’t price by the foot. Every proposal is built from the actual cost of your job — materials, labor, equipment, permits and overhead. The per-foot figures here are a guide to where jobs typically land, not a rate.
What moves a fence price:
- Length. Linear feet of fence is the base of the price.
- Material. Board-on-board sits at the top of the wood range, cedar costs more than treated pine, and black vinyl-coated chain-link costs more than galvanized.
- Height. A 6-foot fence takes more material and labor than a 4-foot fence.
- Gates. Each gate adds posts, hardware and labor, and a wide double gate for a mower or trailer adds more.
- The ground. Slopes, rock and tree roots slow the digging, and a slope can mean stepping the fence down the hill.
- Tear-out. Removing and hauling off an old fence is its own line of work.
Your proposal is one all-inclusive price with the permit and sales tax built in. Fences are paid as a 75% deposit and 25% on completion.

Chain-link, wood or vinyl
| Fence | Privacy | Upkeep | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain-link | You can see right through it | Very little. Galvanized or vinyl-coated wire doesn’t need stain. | Keeps pets and kids in. Black coated wire blends in better than bare metal. |
| Wood privacy | Full privacy with tight boards | Wash it and re-stain or seal it on a schedule. Boards can warp, crack and fade. | A warm, natural look, and damaged boards can be replaced one at a time. |
| Vinyl | Full privacy in privacy styles | Soap and water. No staining or sealing. | Won’t rot. Comes in set panel styles and colors. |
One honest note: if you mainly need to keep a dog in, chain-link does it with the least upkeep. If you want privacy, it won’t. We’ll price two materials side by side if you’re undecided.
How we build a fence
Layout and property lines. We walk the fence line with you and mark posts and gates before anything gets dug. You’re responsible for knowing where your property line is, because a fence on the wrong side of it sits on your neighbor’s land. We recommend a survey when the pins aren’t clear, so a land surveyor can mark the line before we set the layout.
Posts. Posts carry the whole fence, so they’re set before any rails, wire or panels go up. We set fence posts in concrete, typically 24 to 36 inches deep depending on the fence height and soil. Gate posts often go deeper, because they carry the weight of a swinging gate.
Gates. Gates take more wear than any other part of a fence. We plan their spots and widths with you, around what has to pass through: a mower, a trailer, a wheelbarrow.
Cleanup. We lay plywood where equipment crosses your lawn, haul away waste every day at our cost, and run a magnetic sweep for stray nails and screws.
Fence rules in Terre Haute
This is a plain-language summary of the city code, not legal advice. Inside Terre Haute city limits:
- Permit. The city code requires a permit for construction work and names fences specifically. The application includes a drawing that shows where the fence sits relative to the property lines.
- Height. In required yards, fences up to 6 feet above natural grade aren’t treated as obstructions. Open-style fences taller than that are allowed if they block no more than 80% of the view through them.
- Corner lots. Nothing may materially block the view between 3 and 18 feet above the street centerline grade inside a sight triangle reaching 15 feet from the intersection along each property line.
- Pools. In residential districts, a private outdoor pool must be fully enclosed by a 5-foot barrier fence.
- Upkeep. Fences must be kept in good repair and built of durable materials.
In unincorporated Vigo County, the Area Planning Department handles permits, but its permit page doesn’t list fences, so we ask that office before we build. If you have a homeowners association or deed restrictions, check those too. The office that issues the permit has the final word.

Most fences take 1 to 3 days on site once materials arrive. Posts go in first, set in concrete, and the rails, wire or panels go up after the concrete sets.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Terre Haute?
