Washable walls for kitchens, restrooms and clinics

FRP stands for fiberglass-reinforced plastic. It’s a thin, tough sheet, most often textured white, glued over drywall to make a wall you can scrub and sanitize. It takes the bumps from mop buckets, carts and chairs that would gouge painted drywall. You’ve seen it in restaurant kitchens, public restrooms, exam rooms, locker rooms and janitor closets.

We take on commercial interiors two ways: complete build-outs through our design/build process, and trade work under contracting, like FRP panels, drywall, metal stud framing and acoustic ceilings. We work directly for building owners and tenants or as a subcontractor for general contractors, and disruptive work can be scheduled around your business hours when needed.

Co-owner Ryan Bolinger runs the day-to-day on every project. We’re registered with the City of Terre Haute as a general contractor (CL003471), bonded and insured, and we send a certificate of insurance on request.

What FRP costs

FRP wall panels typically run $6 to $9 per square foot installed over sound drywall, with full-spread adhesive, trims and caulked seams. Class A fire-rated panels and repairs to the wall underneath cost more. New drywall, where it’s needed, is priced separately.

We don’t price by the square foot. Every proposal is built from the actual cost of your job — materials, labor, equipment, permits and overhead. The per-square-foot figures here are a guide to where jobs typically land, not a rate.

Two FRP jobs from our records, by scope, town and year:

  • Brazil, 2025. Textured white 4×8 FRP with divider strips, over new 1/2-inch drywall in a commercial interior. About $2,000 for the FRP and about $1,000 for the drywall.
  • Terre Haute, 2026. FRP in two commercial restrooms, added to a larger job. About $1,400 and $2,700, and about $6,300 for both rooms with new ceiling tile.

Both were priced as part of bigger jobs, so the per-foot range above is the better guide for new work. Wall condition, Class A panels, cutouts for sinks, pipes and grab bars, and the number of seams and corners move the number. Your proposal is one all-inclusive price with permits and sales tax built in.

Health departments typically require walls in food-prep areas to be smooth, durable and easy to clean, and FRP is one of the common ways commercial kitchens meet that. Your local health department has the final word for your space.

FRP isn’t a waterproofing system. Water that gets behind a panel at an open seam soaks the drywall, which is why every seam and edge gets sealed. In tile showers we use the Schluter-Kerdi membrane instead; see bathroom remodeling.

How we install FRP

Check the wall. FRP goes over sound, dry drywall or another solid backing, never straight onto studs. Damaged or wet board comes out first, and we find out what wet it.

Full-spread adhesive. Adhesive is troweled over the whole back of each panel, not dabbed in spots, so the panel bonds flat. Where the spec calls for fasteners, they go through oversized pre-drilled holes.

Room to move. Panels expand and contract with temperature, so we leave the small gaps at edges and trims that the manufacturer’s instructions call for.

Trims and caulk. Division bars join the panels, corner trims cover inside and outside corners, and a cap trim finishes the top edge. Seams and edges at sinks and counters get caulked.

ZipWall dust barriers keep the work area closed off, and we clean up every day at our cost.

For general contractors who need an FRP sub

FRP usually goes on after drywall and before the drop ceiling, so we can take all three as one interior package. Send the drawings and the finish schedule, including the panel’s fire rating, and we’ll price from them. We provide a certificate of insurance, a W-9 and lien waivers with our billing, and bill through your pay-application process. If your job needs submittals or closeout documents, tell us up front and we’ll say plainly what we can provide.

How an FRP job runs

  1. Call or request an estimate — Doug Stoliby, our sales manager, reaches out within 1 business day.
  2. Site visit — We measure the walls and check the drywall underneath.
  3. Budget and proposal — A written scope within 5 business days, then one all-inclusive price, e-signed in JobTread and good for 7 days.
  4. Install — Schedule updates and any change orders come through your JobTread client portal.
  5. Walkthrough — We walk the job with you and write a punch list, then issue a Notice of Substantial Completion, which starts your one-year workmanship warranty.

Ceiling, framing, drywall and FRP jobs are typically billed 75% at signing and 25% on completion; as a subcontractor, we bill through the GC’s pay applications. Most projects can start 2 to 6 weeks after you sign, and your proposal lists the dates. A job under about 4 hours is too small for us.

Contacted White Rock Construction about checking our roof for possible leaks. He came out the same day and checked it out. After sealing some holes he told us it was probably wind that blew up some shingles allowing the rain to come in. Friendly and honest service.

FRP panel questions

How much does FRP cost per square foot?

FRP typically runs $6 to $9 per square foot installed over sound drywall, with adhesive, trims and caulked seams. Class A panels and wall repairs cost more.

Can FRP go straight onto studs?

No. It needs a solid backing like drywall. If your walls are open, we hang the drywall first; see drywall.

Is FRP required in a commercial kitchen?

Health departments typically require smooth, durable, easy-to-clean walls in food-prep areas, and FRP is a common way to meet that. Check with your local health department for your space.

What’s the difference between Class A and standard FRP?

The class is the panel’s fire rating. Class A panels resist flame spread better and cost more; your building plans or code official say which one a space needs.

Can you be our FRP subcontractor?

Yes. We price from your drawings, provide a certificate of insurance, W-9 and lien waivers, bill through your pay applications, and can take the drywall and ceiling on the same job.
